Our goal is
to help at-risk children improve academically, socially and
emotionally—to give them hope for a brighter future through
education
and personal growth.
The Enrichment Program is designed to develop the attitudes,
character and motivation necessary for children to succeed
academically, as well as basic skills that provide the
foundation for learning. Children work with trained
volunteers in a structured environment that motivates the
children to strive for their personal best. Activities
include school homework, Great Kids-developed
"Practice-Apply-Learn" individual student workbooks
(spelling and language arts), the Reading Adventure and Math
Blast annual projects -- all designed to improve basic
education by reinforcing reading, math, spelling, and social
and communication skills.
The Tutor Program is designed to equip children with the
necessary skills to achieve and maintain On Grade Level
Reading/Math status. Reading tutors work intensively with
students one-on-one, concentrating on visual tracking
skills, phonics, context clues, and audio clues. Interactive
reading aloud helps students develop comprehension, fluency,
and expressive reading. Students work to improve skills with
spelling, vocabulary, and phonics lessons. The math program
is designed to help children practice, learn, and apply
basic math skills they will use throughout their lives. In
addition to 45 minute one-on-one assistance, students also
work independently, using the Leap Pad Reading System,
Hooked On Phonics, and Math Blaster, all of which help
improve reading and/or math skills in a fun, interactive
way.
